Discover the right energy solutions for your home

A homeowner enjoys relaxing in a room heated by a new Heat Pump

Are you interested in making your home warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, and more affordable year-round? Did you know heat pumps are two to three times more efficient than other heating sources? Energy efficient upgrades such as heat pumps, draft-proofing, and insulation significantly improve the comfort of your home, save you money, and reduce your environmental footprint.

We offer programs and rebates to help you along the way. Some of our programs are based on income and can be combined for greater savings.

Income-Qualified Rebates

Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Grant (OHPA)
Homeowners who want to upgrade from an oil furnace or boiler to an electric whole-home heat pump system are eligible for a rebate of up to $15,000 in this income-qualified program, which can be combined with other Efficiency Nova Scotia programs such as HomeWarming and Home Energy Assessment’s Moderate-Income Rebates. This funding can be used for a heat pump and electrical upgrades that are necessary for heat pump use, installation of a back-up electrical heating system, and removal of the oil tank. These upgrades can be paid in advance of installation.

HomeWarming
Designed for low-income households, our HomeWarming program helps homeowners qualify for free energy efficient upgrades such as insulation, draft-proofing, and a heat pump. Assessments and upgrades are managed by our Delivery Agents from start to finish. Please note that this program has longer wait times due to its popularity.

Moderate Income Rebates (MIR)

Moderate Income Rebates are available to income qualified homeowners for upgrades including heat pumps, improved insulation, and efficient wood burning equipment. With this program, the homeowner is responsible for booking their Home Energy Assessment and managing recommended upgrades with a contractor. Homeowners who currently heat their homes with oil may qualify for stacked rebates of up to $30,000.

Rebates With No Income Requirements

Home Energy Assessment (HEA)
A Home Energy Assessment is the best way to discover how to make your home more energy efficient. A Registered Energy Advisor will conduct a full assessment of your entire home, including insulation levels, mechanical systems, and air leakage; this assessment typically takes two to three hours. Recommended upgrades to your home completed within 12 months are eligible for rebates. This program is open to all homeowners who haven’t started renovations yet, and whose homes are more than six months old. Watch our video to learn more: Understanding How Your Home Uses Energy.

The HEA fee ($199) may be covered by funding if you are in a moderate-income, non-electrically heated household in Nova Scotia.

Heating System Rebates
If you are only interested in installing a heat pump, Heating System Rebates may be the right fit for you. This program is open to homeowners who have installed a heat pump, wood or pellet stove, electric thermal storage unit or solar thermal systems in the past 180 days. Homeowners are responsible for the cost of upgrades. Rebates are granted after the work has been completed.
