WHAT IS A HOME ENERGY ASSESSMENT?

For $199, a Home Energy Advisor will identify where your home is losing heat, what you can do to improve it and what rebates and interest-free financing are available.

$199 FEE WAIVED FOR MODERATE INCOME HOUSEHOLDS

Eligible moderate-income homeowners who are currently heating their homes with oil can apply to Efficiency Nova Scotia to receive a free energy assessment and additional rebates for energy efficiency projects.

Get Started with a Home Energy Assessment

You’re 6 steps away from a more energy efficient home.

Step 1

If your home is eligible, book an initial Home Energy Assessment with a Registered Energy Advisor.

If your household is moderate income (see chart below), you may qualify for a free Home Energy Assessment and additional rebates up to $30,000! Confirm your eligibility and fill out the application. Once approved, an Efficiency Nova Scotia Energy Solutions Advisor will contact you with next steps.

Step 2

Review the custom recommendations from your Energy Advisor. You’ll receive an EnerGuide label and Renovation Upgrade Report tailored to your home.

Step 3

Plan your upgrades. Review the HEA Rebate Guide (PDF) to ensure you understand all program rules and equipment eligibility. If a heat pump is one of your recommended upgrades, look up eligible models with the tool below.

Before starting renovations, homeowners who are eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Grant and who wish to make major renovations to their homes may be eligible for an interest-free loan of up to $40,000 through the Canada Greener Homes Loan to finance these renovations. For more information, visit the program’s webpage or begin your application.

Step 4

Complete your upgrades within 12 months of your assessment.

Step 5

Book your final HEA to assess the improvements to your energy usage.

Step 6

Receive your provincial rebate within 90 days of your final HEA. Federal rebates may take longer to process. If applicable, your Canada Greener Homes Loan payment will start once the work is complete.

MODERATE INCOME

You may be eligible for a free HEA if you’re currently heating you home with oil and your household income qualifies as median or below, after taxes.

Eligible customers must demonstrate that they meet the moderate-income threshold by providing a copy of their most recent Notice of Assessment from Canada Revenue Agency.

OIL TO HEAT PUMP AFFORDABILITY (OHPA) PROGRAM

If your home is heated by oil and your household is at or below the median household after-tax income, then you may qualify to receive up to $15,000 to transition from oil heating to a whole home cold-climate heat pump system.

What’s included? The $199 fee covers the two Home Energy Assessments conducted by a registered Energy Advisor. A funding initiative from the Province of Nova Scotia and Government of Canada is available to help low- and moderate-income Nova Scotians. If eligible, this funding will cover the $199 fee.

How much can you save with an HEA?

Customers cannot receive a CGHG* rebate and an OHPA rebate for the same heat pump system. Please review eligibility criteria carefully, as they may differ between programs.

*The Canada Greener Homes Grant program closed to new applications effective February 12.
